Cholesterol is often seen as an "enemy" of health, but the truth is that it is essential for the functioning of our body. The problem only arises when levels are unbalanced, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Understanding the difference between the various types and how to control them is the first step towards a long and healthy life. The "Good" and the "Bad": What's the difference? Cholesterol doesn't circulate alone in the blood; it travels "hitchhiking" on proteins called lipoproteins: LDL ("The Bad"): When in excess, it deposits on the walls of the arteries, potentially causing blockages. This is the level we want to keep under control. HDL ("The Good"): Works like a cleaning crew, collecting excess cholesterol from the arteries and taking it to the liver to be eliminated. 3 Pillars to Balance Cholesterol Levels 1. Smart Eating It's not about cutting everything out, but about making better choices. Prioritize healthy fats (such as olive oil and avocado) and increase your fiber intake (oats, legumes, and fruit), which help "bind" cholesterol in the digestive system, preventing it from passing into the bloodstream.

2. Physical Activity Exercise not only lowers LDL; it's one of the most effective ways to raise "good" cholesterol (HDL). Brisk walks or regular cycling already make a big difference.

3. Monitoring and Lifestyle Smoking and excess weight are factors that lower HDL and damage arteries, making LDL cholesterol more dangerous. Small changes in habits can be more effective than any drastic measure.

When should you get screened? High cholesterol doesn't hurt or present visible symptoms. Therefore, the only way to know your levels is through a blood test. If you have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, monitoring should be even more regular. Taking care of your lipid profile is an investment in your future. With the right information and simple adjustments to your daily routine, it's perfectly possible to keep your heart strong and healthy.
